Looking back, the end of an era

The past week marked the end of the Easter Sale at the historic Inglis Newmarket complex. For breeders this was quite a nostalgic occasion with many memories, the good ones, and the not so good ones, flooding back.

It has been a place that has delivered many highs and lows but for Kitchwin at least, the final sale beneath the shade of the complex's famous Moreton Bay Fig will be remembered for all the right reasons.

We finished the sale as the 8th Leading Vendor by Aggreagate - a huge achievement from 12 yearlings offered in Session 1. Our average of $364,500 was above the $355,875 Session 1 average but what is really telling about the quality of draft we presented was our superb median price of $320,000.

Best of the Best

"One Hong Kong-based purchaser who increased its spend this year was the Hong Kong Jockey Club. In 2016 the operation purchased three yearlings for $820,000. This year they spent $3,510,000 on seven yearlings and finished Session One as the fifth leading purchaser" - ANZ Bloodstock News.

The most expensive of these purchases was our Snitzel colt out of Scarlett Lady (Lot 330) who was purchased for $870,000 - the most ever paid by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for a yearling at an Australasian sale. Congratulations to his breeders Neil Werrett and Max Whitby.

Weekend Acceptances

Race 4 Galilee Series Final H. L, $151,200 2400m
Lycurgus (AUS) 2013 (G. by Star Witness-Geblitzt) (trainer: D T O'Brien) A $70,000 Inglis Easter 2 graduate in 2015 he was a smart 3.3L winner at Kyneton last month but will probably find a couple better than him here as he steps up in class. Best of luck to his breeder Paul Lanskey.

Race 5 Darley Goodwood Raceday H., $100,000 1600m
Magic Boy (AUS) 2011 (G. by Magic Albert-Zeta) (trainer: Jon O'Connor) A $44,000 Inglis Classic yearling in 2013 Magic Boy is as honest as they come and has won or placed in 16 of his 29 starts to-date. He has a solid second-up record and currently paying $4.40 for a place he is one to include in your multis. Best of luck to his breeder Kim Harding.

Echuca RC Race 1 Quest Echuca Maiden P., $20,000 2100m                                                                                                              Dodge City (AUS) 2013 (G. by High Chaparral-Rare Insight) (trainer: M D Moroney) A $220,000 yearling at Inglis Easter ’15 when knocked down to Paul Moroney Bloodstock, he was brave in defeat last start when taking the lead from a wide barrier before being headed in the closing stages by the 5yo Lofoten Road. Dodge City's jockey reported post-race that his mount wasn't suited to the tight-turning track. He should make a bold show here. Best of luck to his breeders and part-owners Neil Hoar, Michael Everett and James Jackson.

Race 9 Queen of the Turf S. Gr.1, $1,114,500 1600m
Danish Twist (AUS) 2011 (F. by Dane Shadow-Madame Flurry) (trainer: K A Lees) In the G1 Coolmore Classic over 1500m two starts back she was unlucky to be beaten by the narrowest of margins. Conditions here suit and with a little luck we will see her become Dane Shadow's 5th individual Group 1 winner.

Race 8  Port Adelaide Guineas L, $110,330 1800m
Casta (AUS) 2013 (G. by Dane Shadow-Apocrypha) (trainer: Tony McEvoy) Don't be surprised to see this progressive Dane Shadow 3YO sneak into the placings here for the in-form stable of McEvoy Racing.

Newcastle JC

Race 5 Diesel Pro Spares Maiden H., $30,000 1400m

Shield Wall (NZ) 2013 (F. by Savabeel-Natural Rhythm) (trainer: Chris Waller) Bought by KWH for Carl Holt and if the last start rattling home from well back is any guide, then this daughter of Savabeel has an exciting future. Good luck Carl.
